Need some help from the yard, I'm currently ordering a TGLB with black finished blade. But not sure of the pros and cons of paper vs G10. I have black paper on my Ratmandu and I do like it but not much experience with G10. Which is better or is it just personal preference.

Didn't look at the BF post, but I would recommend the G-10. A bit pricier but has the same look as the paper plus it's actually a little grippy.

Hobbes, Thanks that was very useful in my decision making. What did you end up with? I ended up with black paper, there is nothing I don't like about my Ratmandus handles. So if it ain't broke, also a buddy of mine is getting a TGLB with G10 so if its that much of a noticeable difference I'll send it in to swap the handles. Also the saved $50 bucks can go toward the purchase of another knife. Am I too late to order the 1311?

Many people have purchased black canvas and used RiT dye to get it really black. I like the Gray/Black of canvas. Google the Rit dye thing there should be more than a few threads on BF and one or two here as well.

G-10 just kind of rubs me the wrong way on most blades. It really depends on the way it is machined, but in most cases I find it causes more hot spots than Micarta and Res-C. I normally get Canvas Micarta, but with the TGLB, I decided to give Black Paper a go and I like it. When it comes to feel, I prefer Linen and Canvas, but Paper works just fine in my experience.

I haven't tried dying Micarta, although I've seen some people use shoe polish and can't say that I've loved the results. I prefer the feel of canvas Micarta, but think paper or G10 looks better. Paper Micarta is less resistant to impact than G10 -- I've had it ding rather than crack (when a brand new SHBM fell out of my backpack onto gravel walking down the access road at Knob Creek); it isn't aesthetically pleasing, but isn't a broken handle either. I was unhappy, but it was my own fault, so what can you do. My favorite handle material is green linen Micarta, but you don't see it so much anymore.
A few years back, when black paper prices were shooting up like snakeskin, I asked Garth if he thought they'd be getting any more -- he said that G10 was stronger, so he didn't think so, but then they did. If they were the same price, I'd go with G10, but for a $50 difference go with the Micarta -- it looks substantially the same and is tough enough.

@Architect: Any particular reason? @Massive Metal: I'll have to check that out, thanks. @Flux: That's kind of the way I feel about the G-10 on my bro's RMD. I guess only time can tell now. @Jim: My thoughts aswell, I had my RMD fall off my backpack on cement too and the paper got scuffed but it doesnt look bad. Our knives arnt ment to look "pretty" anyways. Like i said for an extra $50 bucks the paper is fine and i can add that to my Knife Fund!, lol.
