Howdy dogs & happy Veterans Day.
It's been awhile since I've posted a knife review over here, but honestly,I haven't been inspired since the War Dog.
I'd been wanting a big chopper from the yard since joining up here & luckily scored a Dog Father thanks to Pvt.Klink proxying for me at Blade 10.(Thank you again Tom!)
Unfortunately I had to sell my beautifull, well loved(used)DF,but I consoled myself with the thought that I'd get the 911 & was planning to order one when Dan announced the coming of a special knife for us dogs only & boy was I excited, especially about getting my JYD# on it.
I had always wanted a scrapper with my JYD# on it,but to keep the great price to performance ratio, the yard doesn't do custom work.
When Dan announced it would be a 13.5" blade & we JYDs could get our numbers lasered on em,I couldn't believe my dream had finally come true.
THANK YOU DAN!!
OK,enough yakking-on to the pics...
I got my 1311 on wednesday & couldn't wait to take it & a few others out for some fun friday.
The group shot of the toys for the day.
As you can see the Marbles Scout Machete sheath works for the 1311 with a little modding & will do until I get some kydex long enough to make a sheath.
The pockets hold an Altoids Tin perfectly.
The 1311 in hand.
By the UPS scale at work the 1311 weights 1.15 lbs. & my DF weighed in at 1.28.
Not a bad trade off...the DF for the 1311.
I lost some weight & gained some reach.
Here's the victim that was conveniently laying there waiting for me when I drove into this camp site.
It was nice & seasoned & burned great despite the soaked bark.
First up was the 1311 of course.
Mike did a great job of sharpening.
It got stuck a few times so I think I'll strip it & see if that helps.
I was actually going to strip it anyhoo.
I love a nice patina on a nekid blade.
Then the Marbles Scout Machete.,it got stuck quite a few times also, but I like the orange so it'll stay coated.
Then the Koyote Chopper..again,sticking was an issue.
It's made of L6 & is just a tad thicker than the Marbles so I wasn't surprised.
Then the KFU Camp Knife.
No sticking issues with this one, hmmmm, maybe because of the weight difference & not having the momentum in the swing as the longer blades,or maybe it's the lack of a coating?
It is 3/16" like the 1311,FFG & convexed.
It did take a bit longer to get through the log though.
So after all the chopping I had to build a fire & thats where the War Dog shines.
I just happened to have some jute twine & fatwood in one of the tins...along with the fire steel.
That zero grind convex edge makes some nice shavings.
A few strikes on the rod & the jute caught then the fatwood shavings & I had me a fa'r!
Yehaw,I will survive!!
