^^^+2 I have a gerber camp axe but if I'm doing something I carry a gerber brush thinner instead. Or a kin blades. Only place it beats them is pounding tent stakes. I have had a chop off between those two Gerbers and the brush thinner beats the axe hands down. Only thing that makes bigger chips is My fiskers splitting/felling axe. For weight and versatility I would say you will find that you don't gain much with the axe. I first started looking at the R9 911 DF junglas and bk9 because for the weight the camp axe just seemed to be a waste in my BOB

On my ATV (back when I didn't live in a big, awful city), I had an 8 inch Fiskars hatchet with a hollow synthetic handle that I really liked.
It was cheap and dependable, but just as importantly, light weight and with room for a few extra tools inside the handle without taking up more space.
Between that and a folding saw I never got seriously stuck.

Thanks for the comments and advice all. It helped me save some money.
Since most of my camping lately has been in evergreens and I am a sucker for hand forged blades, I picked up the Wetterlings Wildlife Axe on the way home form work. Plan to give it and the 1311 a test run this weekend.

One of my local stores now stocks Wetterlings but I was dissapointed to see how their fit and finish was quite poor. I ended up just buying a Collins from my local hardware store and have never looked back. The fit and finish was better on my Collins and with a little attention to the edge I can't see any other axe being much better !

I have a Wildlife hatchet and would highly recommend it. Makes the wood chips fly!

I have a Wetterlings as well and love it. I've never handled a GB but I can't think of any way it could be worth that much more.
It comes down to this: If you buy a GB, you'll be very happy with that axe. If you get a Wetterlings... you'll be very happy with that axe.
Save yourself some coin.

They are both good either is fine as long as you can find a straight one is all that really matters sucks buying those axes in general ive found maybe one out of 10 has perfect alignment.

GBs are definatly top shelf axes I have the Scandinavian Forest Axe and the Double Bit Felling Axe however the edge is profiled for soft evergreen trees if you are cutting harder or seasoned wood GB will increase the angle or you can change the angle to fit your needs.
very very good axes <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />
