So I've been trying to reduce weight in my BOB and it's not easy. I'm wondering what you guys are doing in regards to food? I need to have quite a bit of 22, I'm thinking 1000 rounds. A 5 lb bag of rice is good for 50 servings. The canned meat weight is killing me. What you are guys doing?

Dude, when the shtf all social and moral codes will be null and worthless. Join the countless people who will be going cannibal and as long as you live near a city food will literally be running rampant in the streets... Think about it.

Or if you feel the need to keep your morality buy a vac packer and ditch the cans.

The choice is yours!

Hahaha man was that some messed up advice. (Disclaimer: I am totally joking)

don't know... I'm thinking it would depend on how long you plan to be bugging. also think calories would be pretty important. I don't guesss the goal would be to avoid being hungry as much as it would be to stay fueled up over the course of a few day. you may can find food along the way but what you carry should be fuel to reach your destination.

I think the answer to your question depends entirely upon a few important details.....

-How much food can be easily collected/hunted/trapped from your environment?
-How skilled are you at accomplishing the above tasks?
-How long can you survive without food in your environment?

Get some mainstay bars. They will get you through 72hrs+. Have real food if you will Bug In, have portable ration if you are Bugging Out.

As has been stated earlier it all depends on your skill sets, environmental factors (weather cold = More calories Desert = more water to digest protiens and fats etc.) and the distance you are planning to cover. Some of my favorite easy to hump (low weight) food stuffs are Oatmeal fortified with cheap protein powder, Pancake mix, and peanut butter. I stuff the oatmeal and pancake mix into Quart or gallon size ziplocks and store both in a single nalgene bottle. The peanut butter can be left in the original plastic jar but I usually reinforce the bottle by wrapping it with heavy duty duct tape which also lets me carry a good amount of duct tape for minimal additional bulk(my favorite being Gorilla Tape). Add some pogey bait (protein bars or candy bars), jerky, dried fruit, and some trail mix for on the go energy and you are pretty well set for calories while minimizing weight. Now these are just some suggestions and your mileage and tastes may vary but these types of things keep for quite a while and pack a good amount of energy, protein, and good fats vs weight, are easy to prep in several different ways and are cheap and easy to get a hold of.

regards,
Joe
