Watching some videos my brother sent me about making a bow, I started to think--who here has made and shoots their own bow? I think I may give it a try and see how it turns out. If nothing else it will be quality time in the woods, messing with something and it will get me away from the gun headace out there right now.
When I was a kid I had a little bow my PaPa made me, but he has been gone for a while now. I think I remember where he would go and get Osage Orange and Bouis d'Ark so I may make a trip out there and see if those trees are still standing.
Any advice?

I have built four long bows and each one was better than the last. I was on a run till my daughter moved in and stole my garage work area. I shoot a vintage early 1970’s Fred Bear re-curve off and on and will pick it up again once the weather warms. There is much satisfaction hunting with a stick and string. I have taken four deer with my re-curve and two with my Bear long bow. I built a very nice long bow with boo backing on hickory, I hit a dear with it but lost it when it ventured on Sen. John Warners property. I hope he enjoyed the meet. Good luck on your adventure.

Interesting thread. It made me Google. Check out this page http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Archery/ They even have homemade arrow heads made from old keys.

i saw a cool video on making a bow out of pvc and fiberglass rods. it wasn't professional craftsmanship of course, but pretty awesome to see what you can macgyver up if you need to.

Being the proud owner of one of SF's bows, I can attest to his fine craftsmanship <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
