Just give your friend one of the grocery items to buy. Then she is a separate customer and not involved in your beer purchase. Or just have her go over and wait by the exit. Again, she is not involved in your purchase.
How utterly stupid this "rule" seems!

i asked the clerk what i could do to rectify the situation and she didn't have an answer. i asked her if i left and came back alone would they sell it to me and she said no.
i told her to go get the manager, who was annoyed. i'm glad someone else was also annoyed

Well, considering I'm habitually annoyed, that should make you elated

I am glad to hear that TSA is taking another look at their stupid policy. It is a step in the right direction.
As to the beer thing, their rules and they don't have to sale to you. Judgement call by the place--right or wrong, it is their place of business. If it were me I would just choose to patronize another place.

plus its not like i was buying a 6 pack. it was one bottle. a little common sense helps. Sadly common sense is long dead my friend If you are old enough to go to jail or die for your country, you should [censored] well be able to drink a beer anyway. It always puzzled me how governments always eventually try to legislate against moral corruption, thereby ensuring it by taking it out of the hands of the people who should be teaching their kids in the first place.

i just see this as part of a larger issue which is a symptom of the nation.
i was making a legal transaction. if i decide to do something illegal with that beer after it becomes my property, then i should/could be held accountable for it. what business is it of the clerk's or company's? they've held up their lawful part of the equation and that should be it as far as they are concerned.
i could see it reasonable if i showed up with minors for the express purpose of buying a keg, that is suspicious. but where do you draw the line? maybe you shouldn't sell me a length of rope, a may strangle someone with it. what if i buy gasoline and burn myself alive? I'll play devil's advocate. I'm guessing they could be held liable. For discussion's sake, let's say that girl was a minor, and the transaction was made, if something happened to her because of the alcohol, the store might be sued by her parents. We live in a very litigious society and no one wants their pants sued off.

that shouldn't be legally possible since after the transaction is complete the beer is then my property.
its not like when a bar serves a patron who then goes out and crashes his car.
