Decided after several seasons of blasting stove wood with my beloved Battle Rat to strip and blue her. I must say it was the hardest coating to remove I have ever dealt with. Started with Strypeeze and it could not get it done! Had to go to the Ace Hardware extra strength to get it finished. I bought the $13 Birchwood Casey Blueing kit that Wal Mart sells and gave it a whirl. Here is how it turned out. My BR is pictured with her Blued and Tattooed cousin. I think based on how it turned out that going forward the patina is just going to get better and better each time I need to blue. It was a fun project. Going to be even funner to blast some pin oak with her again this weekend!

there are a few things you can try to get deeper and more even bluing.

the first one is to heat the blade up with a hair dryer. nothing extreme, you just want it warm to the touch. i've been told the pores on the steel will more readily accept the blue.

second one is to really massage that stuff in there, don't just coat it and leave it. i would work it over until the bluing got white and foamy they i would rinse it off with hot water.

and the last one is to hit it with a touch of oil, after my blades are clean i put a light coat of food safe mineral oil on them.

i blued a m4 blade a while back and after using those techniques it came out gorgeous.

Looks great ! You did a nice job . I like my knives better without a coating too . Matter of fact I just stripped my Scrapper 6 today . No blueing though . I just stripped and cleaned it real well then gave it a good rubbing with a Tuff Cloth .

Looks really good. I am going to try Brownell's Oxoblue pretty soon. I have been happy with the finish that the red vinegar gave too.
