Whatever it is, I hope it's a quality budget knife, in the spirit of traditional Scrapyard affordability.

I'm afraid that Dan's hints haven't given much away. Here is the analysis of what's been posted so far.

"The steel is different and found during a dumpster dive"
- So it's not the usual SR 101, not A2 and probably hasn't been used before. The steel was bought by Jerry at auction and forgotten until Dan found it. A hint about the steel is contained in a post written by a Jerry Busse (Boss Hog) fan.

"Contains C"
- Could reference handle or blade material, or maybe Vitamin C.

"It lacks coloris aurei palpates"
- It's not orange handled Res-C.

So Dan, how about some more hints. A theme, perhaps? Bushcraft or Chopper, Steak Knife or Dagger? What is it?

Tom, you are correct. Jerry bought a bunch of 5160 at auction and used it to let some of the guys in the shop practice grinding. Many of the blanks he had cut were bought by Justin Gingrich--legend is Justin bought all 700--and those blanks started the Ranger RD series. I own one of the original RD9s made from a Busse blank. It is one of the blades I will probably be buried with. Tom, unless I'm very much mistaken, I believe you have one too grin Justin did a fantastic job with the heat treat. If there were still some of those blanks kicking around, Dan would sure be able to make one heckuva blade! If that's what we're talking, it's gonna be a nice big chopper grin

D/T, you're right about Justin making good knives, as mine can attest to! wink I'm sure Dan can do a fantastic job on them if that indeed is the steel. smile

So...to recap: Black Res-C 5160 chopper. I'd suggest differentially heat treated, but I think I'd be pushing my luck grin

I never have to worry about that building blowing away! Also, ATS-34, 154CM in the late 80's when you could only get it in 3/16" thick, very narrow bars 1.25" wide I think), BG-42 sometime between '89 - '91 . . . long before anyone else had used it, that I'm aware of., Homemade Damascus (0-1 and 1018), some other exotic steels I'd have to look up to remember, including a Maraging Cobalt/Nickel "350 Vasco Max" or something like that. . . .Weird stuff, you simply baked it at 900 degrees for 9 hours and it would harden out at 58-60 Rc with no chance of rusting. . . NONE!

I was very fortunate in the steel department mainly due to the fact that Koncor industries is within 8 miles of my shop and they are, or were, a division of Latrobe steel and I believe Crucible. I knew the guys at the plant pretty well, so I got a shot at anything new that came in.

I would constantly go there in search of the perfect steel. . .But I could never seem to find exactly what I was looking for. . . . . .back then.

Happily, I haven't been there since 1997!!! wink

Can one usually add the project knife to an already running order?

Email Renee. She can probably help you. She's been one of the most helpful people I've had the pleasure of dealing with at ANY company.
