My BIL has a 988(?) cc Harley that has been setting in his yard for AT LEAST two years with the plugs out and the drive gear guard gone, just rusting away.

No I think that it's toast now. Pistons probably seized up and the drive probably is too. But he did shove paper towels in the spark plug holes.
