I am getting into this with a few friends, and figured I would check here to see if any of my dogs had there licenses.

My main reason is a SHTF type event and being able to coordinate with like minded individuals.

Always been interested for the same reasons. Is it true that Morse code is no longer a requirement?

You can still get a reasonably priced radio, program it, study for the technical exam, and just listen. No license is required until you start to broadcast.

Morse code is not required for at least the lowest tier of the licenses, IIRC. I don't know how much was eliminated.

A fellow that had a huge antenna hanging off the back of his truck when I was a kid told me that if SHTF, the FCC will be the last thing that you need to worry about.

Any tips Ray? how long have you had your licence? This is the one I will be getting it should be on the way now I couldn't find a bad review of it other than it doesn't do some things as well as one 10 times its price.

I am studying and taking pretests as we speak it appears my knowledge of electronics and soldering will come in handy.

I will be ordering one soon
A friend of mine has two of them and the only thing that he suggested was to get the more flexible antenna and the programming cable

I obtained mine a long time ago. I had to pass the code test. grin
I am not familiar with that radio. I have Yaesu and Icom HT's and a Kenwood for HF.
