From the looks of the scenery there, it is near rapids or a waterfall so the air is mist filled all the time. once the sun is right, the rainbow is probably there for a long time.

Yes, CO's explanation is exactly right. We were next to a waterfall. Once you know that rainbows occur ~30 degrees off axis from the antisolar point, it's easy to figure out how to set it up.

"Mist" isn't the best word for it, though. That close to a big waterfall, it's like a very heavy rain falling sideways, with a 35 M.P.H. wind.
