Medium SAPI 9.5" by 12.5" ~6.5 lbs. 2.95 kg. " For the Medium OTV (Outer Tactical Vest)
$ 230
AR500 Armor® 10” x 12” Body Armor Features: 10” x 12” body armor will fit in Plate Carriers capable of accepting up to Medium and Large SAPI plates Outlasts Ceramic, Dyneema, and UHMWPE constructed body armor Multi-Hit capable and Stand-Alone Level III Rifle threat rated for calibers up to 7.62x51 (.308 Winchester) at 2,780fps PAXCON (Line-X) Military grade anti-spall & fragmentation protective coating Certification, Independent, and In-House Ballistic Resistant .25” Ultra Low Profile Weight 7.5lb’s 100% Made in the USA 85 dollars for the curved plate
1 lbs difference per plate I call that negligible we should probable all loose at least 2 lbs I know I could.
Not trying to start a fight just putting the new info out there I believe that many are running on the old school info and not taking into account the new ar500 type steels.

This is interesting, as the only equipment I wore was the old flak jackets; good that they have made improvements. But as some of us are a lot older than when I wore that flak jacket, weight DOES matter!

No problem Ishikawa I just hope it helps. PK weight does matter but 2 lbs isn't a make or break difference for 2 plates IMHO.

Yep I'm trying to decide what carrier to go with. After I move to my new apartment and make sure my budget is balanced I will probably buy then.

After playing with the new compositeplates I have plate envy. I'm just not willing to spend the $$$ to upgrade and I am a huge fan on my triple curve front plate. Its a beast at 12 lbs though. The new stuff is 2lbs or less.

I have some insight into IIIA. When the first designs came out they had no problem stopping a heavy 44MAG round, but the problem was that the energy transferred behind the armor was too great. Similarly, a IIIA might be able to stop some smaller rifle rounds, but it could still leave the wearer mortally wounded and definitely incapacitated. The design modifications really drove up the cost. IIA and III is a good compromise for a majority of rounds fired at police, but for the situation you are planning, who knows.
I think a big reason why armor is effective for military and police is having a medic and evac at hand. From the guys I've talked to, getting hit in armor is not easy to shake off and keep going. I don't know how useful it would be without a support team around, but than again, better than nothing.

Yeah I'm looking into that information. Just because it stops the bullets doesn't mean your home free. You catching a ton of kinetic energy. Looks like several manufactures are making a special pad to ride behind the plate to help counter and slow that energy dump.

The steel plates help with the KE (less deformation and more surface area to disperse it.) but a pad behind them would be welcome.

Yeah those are the pads I was talking about. Also their carbon nano tube armor is cool. If worn with a hard plate would you wear it infront to catch bullet fragments or behind to cushion impact?
