Well, it has a flat spot that essentially functions as a choil. It forces the edge to be further away from the index finger. If you want the edge to be closer you must choke up on the flat, which IMO is not a very safe place to put your index finger. Not to mention it would not be comfortable using in this manner for very long.

I suppose, but I don't find my index finger being THAT far away from the edge. I'd say the handle design keeps my finger further away from the edge than that little choil-like flat spot.
