Yes he did. He was looking at the Savage Rascal.
If I were looking to get a pack rifle chambered in .22lr, my rifle would be a Buntline with target sights. It's not lightweight, but it's sturdy, compact, and I like the repeatability.

SAA with a very long barrel. Wyatt Earp was supposedly famously gifted one. For this application I would take mine in .22lr.
