I am holding out until at least April. Hopefully the new single stack 9mm Glock will be in production.

I just hope its a little bigger than the 42.

I keep screwing around and adding new calibers!

Picked up a .270 Winchester barrel for my Handi-Rifle. I really had no interest in the caliber but it was a pretty good deal. I was thinking of selling it but after doing some reasearch it seems some folks really like it as hunting round for deer and elk sized game. It would also add some range to my current collection which is what I had been thinking of doing with a .308 or .300 bolt rifle. I come out much cheaper this way I guess but again it's another caliber. I will most likely still get the .300 (another caliber) and just keep the .270 as a backup.

Any thoughts on .270 Winchester?

Really accurate too. It's too bad it's not a mil/super popular caliber (don't get me wrong, it's popular), I would consider it a little more myself. perhaps in a few years when I've settled on rifles that will have ammunition during TEOTWAWKI, then I'll start enjoying the wide world of ammunition smile

The 270 occupies a pretty crowded group of hunting cartridges
Many will debate on why 1 is better then another but in my opinion it is mostly hot air
As a general hunting cartridge for deer, black bear sized game, the 270, 7mm-08,308 and 30/06 are pretty much the same
Yes the 270 is slightly flatter shooting, yes with heavier ammunition the 30/06 may be better suited for larger bears
But for average hunting you really won't notice any difference

Yup, well I guess the .270 handi barrel will be a keeper. It appears it will do what I bought the 30-30 to do and maybe do it a little better. Simple enough for a inexperienced shooter since its a Handi-Rifle and (hopefully) accurate and flat shooting with enough knock down to reach out to where I wouldn't want to go with my 7.62x39 bolt rifle. This is good for my plans to setup some hunting lanes and stands on some of our property.

I wasn't looking for a rifle to put a ton or rounds through so this does keep my price down as the barrel was only $80 and fits my current handi frame perfectly. All together I have barrels in .357(.38), 45/70, .270, and 12 gauge that will all work on the same H&R frame. That could make for some serious meat getting right there.

Been reading the Handi-Rifle may be going away soon...

With that set of barrels you could hunt anything in North America

Inside 150 yards or so a 30/30 is every bit as good as a 270 on deer sized game
Plus if you handload, then you can load Spitzer bullets in the 30/30 which changes the characteristics of the round

I'm not handloading yet. With the 336 I didn't want to drill it for a sling so I was planning to keep it as a stand rifle and just set it up for 100-150 yards. I got reduced recoil loads for my younger cousins and Leverevolution for a stouter load. I figured I probablt wouldnt shoot it very much. But I just went and pulled the scope off as I like it better that way and it's much lighter. I will most likely find some cheaper plinking ammo to use now. I may even look at peep sights and at some point try it at hog hunting. I can see shooting it a lot more without the scope.

No Spitzer bullets in a 336
Tubular magazines and Spitzer bullets are a nono

that Leverlution stuff is nice, Pointed bullet performance while still being safe for lever guns. It's amazing what modern polymers can do, haha
