I have always like the blazer brass as well and when you are done you can police your brass and reload it any way you would like.

Totally accidental, I was to far into my squeeze and swing to stop as the cross hairs came to the tree, as the rifle went off I knew what was going to happen, even saw the strike on the bark. Despite missing the hog it was a cool thing to a point.

Andy,
You might appreciate this...

Bought a Sterling MK-6 today (US legal pre 1989 ban SA Sterling Police Carbine).

Basically a closed bolt SA mk4 Sterling with a 16" barrel.

Only 1600 were made. Nobody seems to know how many made it into the States. My uncle had one around 1985 for a while. I've wanted one since.

Figured the FA versions were issued to our Aussie brethren in need if a SMG?

The Sterling SMG is one of the very best SMGs produced in the world (for military uses), New Zealand bought them but we here in Australia have always gone our own way with SMGs, years of jungle fighting saw use favour a TOP loading magazine design that started with the Owen Machine Carbine in WW2 and then lead to the F1 SMG in the 60s (we took both to Vietnam). The F1 only move on in the 80s when the F88 replaced everything (M16, SLR and F1).

F1 SMG...

... you will see some SLR influences in there (they were made at SAF Lithgow wink )and it uses the Sterling magazine. I have sent over lots of F1 magazine pouches to the US as I was able to find them because the Sterling owners crave them... wink

We did make limited use of the L5 (supressed) Sterling here, but in numbers well under 100.

The MP5 was (well is) the choice of SF types needing an SMG for black work and CPP duties.

Andy,

Back in the 90's I had a Class 3 collection (legal full autos). My Class 3 Dealer / Friend had both an Austen and Owen. His Owen still had the green camo paint on it. Of course, he also had Thompsons, Stens, Madsens, Berettas, S&W 76s, Uzis, MP5s, MP38 and 40, MACs, American 180s, PPSH, M16s, BAR, 1919, Sturmgwehr, AR18, M2 Carbine, and many more. The gun he liked best was that Owen. It was an odd SMG, but UBER rare and he coveted it.

When he died in the early 2000's his wife turned his collection over to a known friend to liquidate. I never heard, but I estimate his collection was worth $200k then and closer to $450k now.

Going to his house was like the best gun show / museum / experience ever.

I forgot...

Lancaster, MG34, and a formidable number of suppressed weapons.

My first time over to buy my first class three....he had six of his MP5 variants sitting on a pool table for me to look at. I couldn't afford those. I bought a $1600 MK760.

Yes the Owen is unusual at the start for anyone not familiar with it. During WW2 it gained great popularity with the Diggers for its function in the jungle (they were also issued Thompsons). An interesting and little known fact is that the US placed a very large order for Owens (in .45ACP) late in the war. Due to the politics between Lysaghts (who made the Owen) and the established military (and SAF Lithgow) the order was not passed along quickly and as a result production never commenced prior to the end of the Pacific campaign.

The Austen was "the systems" answer to the need for an SMG and is essentially a STEN with a MP40 type folding stock. It was NEVER popular with the Diggers who generally looked upon it with disdain. At the end of WW2 they were all withdrawn while the Owen soldiered on to Korea and Vietnam. The Z Specials did make use of the supressed Austens in some of their training and raids however.

A close friend of mine in the US has a great collection of C3 stuff that includes a Carl Gustav M45 and a SW76. The M45 is probably my FAVOURITE SMG to shoot !!!!!
