I heard that hot vinegar is interesting. Mu mango tree used to give my RD9 a purplish patina very quickly. Maybe I'll try a potato, lemon, or vinegr next. It's interesting though. Kind of a wanna'be digi camo this time around.

ohhh. okay. but if you do it right it will look good right? can you just bathe thw whole blae in something? will this cause the whole thing to become one different color? or will it be broken up? i want to try this on a ka-bar bowie(since its 1085 carbon) when i finally get one. does it affect the blade in performence or anything since its basically a controlled corrosion?

eatingmuchface: If you do it right? Please, tell me how. I was just sharing what sort of patina covering the entire blade in mustard will result in on the DF. I have no idea why the entire blade did not discolor. I think I will try lemon juice or vinegar next.

I kinda like the "blueing" look where the whole knife takes on one color but this was interesting. I just hand rubbed some yellow mustard on it and let it sit for about 6 hours.

I cleaned the DF up to a satin finish (my favorite) and have rubbed a lemon all over it. It has only been an hour but I can already tell that it is spotting darker similarly to the mustard. I am not sure why this is. I'll post pics later.

It could be that this needs to be done several times and for longer periods. But it's fun none the less.

I use tectured spray paint on my black knives to touch them up

On my use knives, I tend to cold Blue them and let nature takes its course from there

So far, the lemon seems to be darkening the entire blade. More uniformly than the mustard but I am still seeing darker patches. Perhaps when I am finished with the lemons I can lightly scrub the blade to try to get the darker spots to blend in.

Still, I want to know why some spots are darker than others. Hmmmmmm.

BTW - DN - its looking great.

I used a stainless steel kitchen scrubber to even out my bluing in between applications - I had the same problem. I'd blue, rinse, scrub, blue, rinse, scrub - until I got what I was after. I would also blue, then apply Liquid Wrench over top of the bluing (and it would turn a blue color, instead of brown) and then rinse. That was an accidental but pleasant discovery!

diceman: that sounds like a good technique. I'll have to give the stainless steel kitchen scrubber a try. Thanks for the tip.
