Ilyana, Jordan and I went to the woods today for a little bit - I started a fire w/ a flint (ferro rod) - assisted by the Dogfather for a little chopping and the Swamp Warden for getting some tinder together. It was pretty windy when I was working on this, and had started to rain, but I got a fire going none-the-less after a couple of false starts that were blown out by the wind before they could get stated.

You can't see it in the picture, but under my tinder is a ball of dead broadleaf grass of some kind that I'd shredded and balled up - it caught very easily and got the pine needles going, even in the wind and light rain.

Cool stuff bro, good to keep practicing them skills. how late in the seasons to do stuff like that? I should do more poor/bad weather training, nice job We need to hook up at Glacier National! We missed going on my move due to truck problems but would like to go next spring/summer.

That would actually be an excellent idea bro. My wife wants to go visit a friend in Washington in the spring/early summer - we should figure something out. She hasn't been to Glacier, and I haven't been since I was a kid. We'll keep that on the back burner for a few months and figure it out!

And - I plan on getting out over my Christmas break by myself some in the snow and working on some skills - might as well make it challenging!!

Thanks guys! Jordan is funny, always running - gotta keep an eye on him or he'll disappear. Ilyana is always cold - which is crazy cuz she's Russian. Dave - I use the crap out of that sheath - it'll outlast me for sure, you did a great job on it. And... yes, family time is the best!

great pictures diceman. always a good idea to keep up on the firemaking skills. when you really need one is not the time to shake off the rust.

Now that the heat and humidity has broke here in N. Florida I find myself making several fires a week. It's great fun with firesteel in hand and seeing what I can do. This afternoon I planned to make a firebow. I haven't done that since I was a kid in boyscouts.

I made an attempt this summer with my brother - and even with two of us we failed miserably!! We had a lot of smoke, but that was it. We melted through para cord and worked until muscle failure...

After some research, I think that our bow was too tight. I'll get it eventually though!
