Well the weather is taking a turn for the worse over here...starting to get very cold...we had some snow overnight...

[Linked Image from i343.photobucket.com]

I was doing some belt sander work this morning...usually I do this outside...but it was too cold to concentrate...had to come inside...then went for a bit of a walk to pick up my car having left it at the Pub last night...took the short cut over the hills...realised that in this weather you don't want to be messing about in a survival situation with ferro rods and wet kindling...it reminded me of why in the Forces a lot of fires get started with a magnesium flare...they burn white hot and are the ultimate fire starter...they can easily cope with wet wood...definately must pick up one or two of these for emergency cold weather use....when it's freezing like this you don't want to be messing about...overkill rather than "sadly killed etc"...

Thanks C.P. I do love where I live...this looks down the valley from my Kitchen...behind the house we go back to the Pennine Hills...basically high moorland...a great place to go for some long walks and good for long range shooting...as near to Wilderness as you can find over here...but I still yearn for the real thing...too many walkers and hikers for me to feel truly at peace.

you try to follow what others are talking about

or

you talk about something entirely different <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

like so!

this thing is super sexified and i want it. only about the price of a battle mistress. too bad can't just go to the trade forums and let one of mine go for this.

i wouldn't trade my muddy snakeskin cgfbm for it, though.

A big part of surviving a bad situation is knowing when the situation is getting bad, i.e., when you need to be preparing. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" holds true any time you're outside. I've been out in the woods for hours at a time when it was mid-30 degrees (Fahrenheit) and raining, and I was very comfortably warm. Why? Because I was prepared for the weather. I didn't need to scurry around looking for shelter and dry wood because I had the correct attire to slog it out. That same situation without the proper clothing is extremely dangerous. Preparedness can change a life threatening trip into an unusual and exciting trip.

Starting a fire in the middle of a downpour or blizzard is hard, which is why the experienced outdoorsman will see that weather coming and prepare before it hits. It's good to learn about and practice "survival skills", but you really really don't want to be a survivalist.

Steel Fan, it looks like you were not alone out there. Left side of image, mid height. Is that a person in mid-stride or some field furniture? Scale is not clear against the snow...

The big 3's CEOs will return to capital hill sometime this week to try to get some bailout money. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Hopefully they will come up with a good "plan" this time...

LOL!....Yes it was someone out for a walk...got to say that the snow often draws more people out than anything else...you have to agree with Momaw's be prepared thing...added a couple of smoke flares to the "liberation" list next time I am mooching round the QMS stores...good for being spotted if you break a leg...on the moors there is very little wood...it would be interesting to experiment with burning wet heather using a mag flare...the moors has to be our hardest environment to be stuck in...no snow caves are possible as it is usually just wet and very windy...no improvised shelters because no trees...very exposed...basically you would need a bivi bag and sleeping bag to stand a chance...heather is good for a mat though...
