Anybody here really up on flashlight bulbs? I'm looking at the possibility of replacing a bulb in a light that's been kicking around here for a while. But I want to replace it with an LED instead of the halogen that's in it. I can remove the bulb no problem, but the number that's stamped on it is apparently custom to this particular company. Not a standard bulb type. The only replacements offered are more halogen. Since flashlights are so dirt simple, I'm thinking I could just get a bulb that's similar in dimensions (it's not too weird looking) and works at the same voltage, but... I have no idea how I'd go about finding a bulb type from physical dimensions. Thoughts?

I think that the reflector / refractor designs are different btw incandescent and led heads. I don't think you'll get a 1 for 1 swap replacing an incandescent for an led (my maglight is a good example). Some may think differently, though.
It could work, perhaps. I have had luck replacing them by taking a bulb, breaking the glass and soldering in an led in the base of the bulb thus maintaining the flashlight power interface pts - i did this before led replacements were so popular.

I can't decide: Swamprat Harry Carry or Delta belt Sander SA180? Both can be had for just a few bucks more than $100. Right now, I'm using the HF 1"x30".

Is " sea to summit" bushwhack or trail ? its all trail, but the hard part is i dont want any resupplies and the variance in climate changes from 86-possibly 30 at night in the higher elevations. also bring enough food and water is scarce.

Just on the subject of LED swaps, keep in mind that most LEDs need to be able to sink off a lot of heat! Most LED conversion units have extra size to help with that so soldering a high power LED in just won't work. No to mention the voltage and current requirements.
What flashlight are you looking to do the switch on?

What flashlight are you looking to do the switch on? I have seen the conversion kits and belive you are absolutely correct.I was able to put a diffent bulb in one of my surefire lights- but performance was terrible. It seems like all lights have a voltage issue- amp drain- and some of the circuts are " regulated" . I think you maybe able to rig it- but performance might be suspect. Just my thoughts as I am agreeing with Coldone.

The light in question is a Princeton Tec model Tec 40. A rather boring light, but solidly made, and there's really nothing wrong with it. It's just that after using some decent LEDs, the weird throw pattern and extremely yellow flavor of light off the halogen is annoying. The Tec 40 has 4 AA's in series; the bulb in it is stamped 4.8 volts, 0.5 amp.
The company now makes the Impact XL, which is also 4 AAs, with a 1 watt LED... but why toss out a perfectly good casing?
By the way, I'm not really a fan of voltage-regulated LEDs. They murder alkaline cells like crazy, and lithium or nimh types don't need it because they deliver a strong voltage throughout. *shrug*
