It truly is dependant on the species of taro that is used to make the poi that will determine taste. There are some maker's who have poi that is quite sweet.

The way I got my screen name was derived from those who love to eat poi...my family calls it poi dogs

...funny story about "poi dogs" When my dad was a kid, he and his brother would play with a neighborhood kid. He'd tease them poi dogs (the kid was caucasian, portuguese to be exact), so one day my dad and his brother told the the kid that they should play cowboys and indians and that they would be the cowboys and he, the indian. They told him that they would tie him to the tree and act as if they had just captured the indian. The boy agreed and my dad and uncle went about the job of tying him up. They did so, real tight and good. When the job was done, they left him there, told him "you want to call us poi dogs HUH!?", and went home. Needless to say, the boy eventually got out and my dad and brother got in trouble when the kid's parents spoke to my dad's parents.

That's true. My dad's brother HATES poi with a passion and they were pretty old school Hawaiian. He would throw up when he was made to eat it as a kid...hates it to this day.
