Good stuff, Brian. I like using the little knives for light cutting and batoning, too.

That is light cutting for the dogfather <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I don't even see any sweat!

Great Vid <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

I sometimes think that the people who have issues with batoning really don't like to use their knives.

Here is another example of Batoning which goes back into history a long ways.

It's called a froe and it's used for making wood shakes.

To me batoning is a technique that means my S6 can be nearly as useful a field knife as my DFCG without the weight penalty! If you don't think you can hit your 'super knife' with a wood baton without fear of damage- is that knife really a field or bush-craft knife?? Glad I collect Busse family knives, you can club 'em with 'no fear'...

"sharpshooter" (reid) who i think makes the sheaths for Barkriver knives, wrote some article on batoning, and how to do it properly, i guess if i was usinbg my kabar or something i would worry about doing it right, but not with a dogfather. =]

Loved the Video, BrianA.

As for the rights and wrongs of abuse (I'm still actually trying to figure out the non-Yard consensus as to what abuse really is), here's my two bits: That's what I like about this whole Busse/Swamp Rat/Scrap Yard reputation. Making the knife good enough to stand up to abuse helps you feel confident for those situations where the knife may be all you have and you may not have 'proper' use as an option.

But, as Reid Hyken points out on the Bark River Website: "If you use the correct technique almost any knifecan be used to baton, including folding knives although I strongly recommend against doing so." (Batoning and Hidden Tang Knives)

Regardless, I'm with Paul the Brit! Being able to baton a knife simply makes the knife more versatile. Doing more with less a goal for me, and "...that means my S6 can be nearly as useful a field knife as my DFCG without the weight penalty!"

So all I'm waiting for now is a new release of the S6...

chopping a toilet is edge abuse with busse clan steel. regular use for our knives is abuse for any other brand.

a fellow tried to disassemble a toilet using a Crash Rat. Fired ceramic is significantly harder than SR77 & it did a number on the blade

It makes sense you sharpen a knife with ceramics. That's why I like a wood handled hawk with a blunt back edge for smashing toilets.
I was reading a really interesting book called Mantrapping by Ragnar benson last night and you would need a knife capable of batoning for most of those traps.
Other than wire though thats all you need. I am definitly getting his other book survival poaching.

Ragnar was a merc in africa in the 70's and had the opportunity to use these techniques.
You NEED a knife that can take some abuse to be able to stand up to hard use and be sharpened in the field. I notice that there are a LOT of S30V survival knives which to me is silly. S30V is a great steel for an EDC but you want something you can sharpen on a rock or simple stone if you are out in the boonies. No matter how good your edge retention is it will need to be resharpened especially if you use it hard.
