product designers follow trends? Right on the latter... ZT definitely ain't following trends with their knives. C'mon, heavily machined G-10 and sculpted for less than 200 bucks. That's definitely a trend. But why Aluminum for a frame? Titanium, apparently, is stronger and would be much better suit for abuse. Sure Aluminum is light, but were talking about a folder here. I mean you don't see Aluminum frames on framelock knives.

you mean "right on the former."
the design has little to do with ZT, it's Galyean's. they think it'll sell, they'll make it. if trendy sells, they'll sell it. it's not like they reinvented the knife. they've got the buying and production power of kai cutlery, so they can sell strider class knives for less. bigger company, more technology, more experience, economies of scale, lower price. look how sculpted and irregular the standard kershaw line is. at half the price, i think it costs only slightly less to produce.

I was being sarcastic.
True about them getting it to sell, but the I should have mentioned that my question wasn't just limited to ZT.
I still think it's rather odd that we use Ti on high quality folders (frame-locks mainly). Ti is extremely strong stronger than Al, it would make more sense to use Ti for an Auto. I mean, yes it might be more expensive, but then again what isn't. People constantly buy folders that are in the four digits.
I've never seen a Ti auto. No even Ti Knives use Ti.

by the same logic, why don't we use titanium on all folders?
it's because frn will do the job, and frn's much less. go spyderco!
