arr i give up! what is a good bomb proof folder ive broken two this week, one gerber fast draw and my benchmade pika, both locking mechanisms failed

I'd suggest moving up the quality scale a bit to get something a little tougher in the lock department. The Benchmade Monochrome is priced near the Pika and has a pretty tough framelock. Ditto the JYD2 from Kershaw. If you can spend a little more for a Griptilian you can find one with an Axis lock.

All Spyderco midlocks are not the same. I would favor the metal handled/lined Spydies over the straight FRN for example. The Manix, on the other hand, is the tank of mid locks but is somewhat expensive assuming you can find one.

forget framelocks, makes the knife too thin for my tastes, i have a mini grip and its too small for me, and all griptillians have the axis lock, im leaning towards getting a ozbourne dezigned knife by benchmade i forgot the model

no it isint nearly priced, your thinking of the cheaper pika2 i have the original pika, was like $50 it is still useable but the lock bar moves up and lets the blade move back baisically busted, it bent the pin for the lock bar

I have a Chinook3 and it is just as much a tank as the Manix but is still in production.

I would also like a 710 Benchmade with the axis lock.
Small fixed blades like the Streetbeat which I just got today and the Skelly Wardens are easy to keep concealed with good sheaths.

EEEEK!
I wouldn't go with CCing a knife.
good way to get it confiscated I guess.
Get yourself a Strider Logan.
(no matter what Mag says!)

Really though, If you want something w/ a STRONG lock your gunna have to check out a few Framelocks.

One nice and reasonably priced(for a framelock at 200$)framelock is the new Darryl
Ralph Combat Elite. It is a very well designed spearpoint made from 440C which is one of my favourite steels for an EDC although it is not as popular as it once was.

You don't really need a Framelock for a good strong folder. Any of the classic folders are excellent and got that way because they are good. The benchmade 710 with the axis lock or any Spyderco with it's backlock but especially the exta beefy Manix and chinook3 are great choices. I have a 30$ Stainless byrd CrossBill
that has a very good lock. I don't like CRKT but they have a decent locking system as well in the autolawks.

If you are really worried about sheeple you might want to try a bright coloured knife like the pink or orange spydercos or the rainbow leek. It is amazing the difference that the same knife in black and then bright blue makes to sheeple.

My oldschool Tuffram Spydercos showed up today <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I was worried about them getting through customs but they arrived unscathed.
They are really cool and the aluminium Tuffram coated police is so much lighter than my Stainless one. I also got a Tufram Worker and they are both fully serrated.

So, I went to the local army surplus to check out some knives. I've been resisting the urge to buy a Bussekin from the BFE or elsewhere, and figured if I could play with some knives I might be able to resist doing so.

Low and behold, they got a real nice selection of Muelas, SOGs, Kershaws,CRKTs, Spydercos and Byrds since I was last in.

So, I'm playing with them and decide I'm gonna pick one up. So I start checking the prices and I see the price on one of the Byrd knives and think, "That's gotta be wrong." So I ask the guy on the counter, and he says Nope, they were having problems selling it at the regular price, so they knocked it down to clear it out.

I ask him how many he's got, and he tells me it's the last one. So, I pull out my wallet to pay for it, and the total he gives me seems low. I ask, and he says that military get a 15% discount, on top of the reduced sale price! AWESOME!

Then, he even pulls out their Spyderco Edgemaker and procedes to spend a few minutes giving it a nice edge, just in case it got dulled a little since it was their display model. I love this guy, talk about leaving me feeling great after a crappy day at work.

So, here's my new folder, which will hopefully help me resist the urge to buy any other knives until Dans' next SYK release is announced.

The price in the last pic is in Candadian funds, so that's even less for you guys down south of the border.

Sure, it's not a new SYK, Bark River, or whatever, but the weight and construction feel good. The regular price was $49.99, so they sold it to me for less than half the original price. Doesn't hurt my budget saving for an SYK knife, and I got a new "playtoy"!

Thanks; after the 15% discount and the 13% taxes, the total for it came to $22.04 total. I wish he had more, for that price I would've bought two more!

I have a Stainless crossbill and am really impressed with it's fit and finish.
49$ is way overpriced for a Byrd but 22$ is an awesome deal. I think my Byrd was 32$ retail. When the stainless gets all scratched up it is easy to polish it back to a ice satin finish with some sandpaper. It is also nice and slim and conceals well although it is rather heavy.
The 8Cr13MoV steel is quite close to ATS-34 and hold a decent edge and seems pretty tough. My Crossbill has a bit of play but I have used it really hard ovr the last year. It would totally fail the flick test though as it can be whipped open with a tiny flick of the wrist.

I actually got 4 new Spydercos this month ,2 of which came yesterday.
I got a Caly3 with beautiful carbonFibre scales and a laminated ZDP blade and a Streetbeat which is a really nice Fred Perrin design made of VG-10 and micarta.
The ones that came yesterday are the really cool ones though are the 2 Tuffram coated aluminium handled old school Spydies I got from super fellow Dog Rooikat.
[Linked Image from i529.photobucket.com]

They look the same colour in the photo but the small one is called the Worker and it is much darker in real life. The big one is one of my favourite designs
the Police and it is so much lighter than my Stainless version of the same nice it is shocking. The Worker makes a great partner for my Caly3 because they are the same size ,they are both very light and one id serrated and one is PE.

Both Tuffram knives are GIN-1 although the police is marked G2.

I think i should take a Spyderco collection photo now.
