i see a lot of over the shoulder bags being advertised for escape & evasion bags or for BOB's and i dont get it.

why over the shoulder instead of a full blown backpack???

if i was in a bad situation and was having to escape or evade or whatever i would want my hands free for many different reasons.

i wouldnt want some bag bouncing all over the place,up and down.left to right, fron to back if i had to run and getting in the way if i had to climb.

i guess the only advantage i can think of would be you wouldnt have to take the pack off to get inside it.everything would be right their.

now dont get me wrong,i have some of these but E&E and BOB's arent what i have in mind for them.i just use them to keep crap organized in.when its time to hit the rode its all going into a pack.

am i alone,crazy or drunk.....

select D for all of the above

All my over the shoulder bags either have the means to attach to my belt or have built in belts to keep them from swinging around or bouncing. For some reason I prefer them to backpacks.

For my purposes, an E&E bag (wide belt loop) is simply a way to carry/organize basic survival items and small enough to carry with me EVERY TIME I venture into the boonies to hunt/fish/hike.

That one single time you leave your kit (or knife or gun) behind because it is too heavy or bulky is exactly when "Mr. Murphy" rears his ugly head!

That said, my vehicle BOB is larger as it contains items that I would consider a luxury item in a wilderness (or urban) survival scenario (i.e. tent/sleeping bag/axe/etc).

if an over the shoulder bag is good enough for Jack Bauer, it's good enough for me.

Shoulder bags are quicker and easier to access while on the go compared to backpacks. In terms of E&E accessing something while moving might be the difference in escaping or being captured.

Also many of shoulder bags are starting to have waist straps that hold the bag pretty close to your back.

I (blushing) actually have the Jack Bauer bag. It is one of the best, simplest shoulder bags I have ever used. I use it daily now for work (it has replaced my Filson's briefcase). I also used it at the last few militaria shows I went to to tote my new spoils around.

Shoulder bags are just a newer version of the "possibles bag" carried by early frontiersmen. It enabled them to carry important survival items/lead balls, etc. while on the move. With so many new and innovative items available today they are a great way to carry a survival kit, etc.

I've been wanting a good shoulder bag. Accessing my water bottles is awkward with my el cheapo fanny pack. Which ones are best? I've been looking at the Maxpedition line, the Fat Boy and the Jumbo.

Vic - those look like great bags but a little rich for my blood. I always check my catalogs from places like Cheaper Than Dirt, Sportsman's Guide, etc. L.A. Police gear has the 2 quart canteen bags in khaki on sale, and even gas mask bags could work.

Thanks, Tom. I found one I like at Amazon for $9.00, so I ordered two (just knowing one of my daughters will want mine). I have decided to carry a canteen separately on its own strap for fast access.
