You have to look into the regs in your province concerning cross bows. In New Brunswick, you can't hunt with them. However, in Ontario, you are allowed to own and hunt with them. Pick up a copy of the hunting regs for your province and look into it, Unsub. It may be worth it for you.

I have a Wildcat somewhere in the garage. Gotta constantly wax your string for best results. Heh, gets me to thinking how long I have been into weaponry, including crossbows. Used to drive 100 miles round-trip every month for custom bolts. And yes, I used to cut shurikens out of sheet metal and pretend I was a ninja <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> .

I am not surprised to see Bramel has a rack of the best ones.

I did not even know they were legal to hunt with. I have a martin youth bow to practice with and also because it is easy to get through thick brush with.
Around here crossbows (and regular bows) were associated with poachers because they are quiet.

I may have to look into one.

The Keeper would a-hunting go
And under his coat he carried a bow
All for to shoot at a merry little doe
Among the leaves so green O.
Chorus:
Jackie boy! (Master!)
Sing ye well? (Very well.)
Hey down! (Ho down!)
Derry, derry down.
Among the leaves so green O.

I've always found that any bow, be it recurve, compound, or a crossbow (recurve or compound) should always have the string waxed, to help prevent wearing on the string, and help for a smooth release when firing. It also protects the string from bad weather, although this point is usually dependent on what your string is made from.

Plus one on that. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

I always make sure to work the wax into the string with my thumb and finger.

Always wax the string. You'll get so much more life out of it.

You guys seem to be advocating,... waxing your string. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Unless it's already waxed?

I thought most modern bow strings were made of dacron nowadays, a synthetic fiber. Water repellancy being sort of a non issue. So the wax would mainly slow inter-fiber abrasion?

I don't get to do the bowhunting thing here but before I lost my leg I use to be an avid bow hunter, I used a Pearson Rogue, I ate many steaks thanks to that bow!

So I'm looking at getting a crossbow, because they've changed the guidelines for hunting in my area. You can't use rifle or shotgun for deer anymore, only bow or muzzleloader. So, I've been doing some research, and think I'm going to settle on the Barnett Wildcat C5 compound crossbow.

Anyone ever use one of these? Good or bad remarks? Any other compound crossbow you might recommend?

I cannot believe this... Canada has dropped the ball again... No guns for HUNTING!>!>!>! Are you kidding me>? Unreal. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif" alt="" /> But from what I hear, there are some mean mean mean crossbows out there, depending on how much you want to drop on them. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Not all of Canada of course, only in certain zones. They designate certain areas bow only, depending upon the size of the deer herds and the amount of nearby housing. If I had been aware of the change in hunting regs due to recent residential areas being built, I would've bought my tag in one of the areas up North of where I live. I can still hunt with bow, rifle, shotgun, or musket/black powder rifles up there.

Anyway, I'm waiting on some money to come in, and then I'm going to go buy the Barnett Wildcat from Bass Pro in Toronto for $329.95, and they throw in a free quiver of twelve arrows. So, it's a pretty good deal.
