It's S7 tool steel that's undergone a special, SY-proprietary heat treat process. It's a general-purpose, air hardened, tool steel with a high resistance to impact and shock.
Element Percentage Carbon 0.50% Manganese 0.70% Silicon 0.30% Chromium 3.25% Molybdenum 1.40%
Temp in DegF, Rockwell C Hardness As Hardened - 59-61 300 - 57-59 400 - 55-57 500 - 53-55 600 - 52-54 700 - 51-53 800 - 51-53 900 - 51-53 1000 - 50-52 1100 - 43-48 1200 - 37-40

thanks man how does the edge hold and does it rust The edge will roll easier than Infi and SR101, but that's perfectly ok with me since it's easy to fix. It will not chip easily and it is extremely, extremely tough. Yes, it rusts and needs to be looked after. Clean and dry after use, lightly oiled and remove from leather sheath if stored for longer periods. Did I mention it's tough?

Thank you, now if only I would follow my own advice As an example - last weekend I barbequed a chicken and cut it with my Mutt. I didn't clean the blade (except wiping it off) and the next day the edge (which is higly polished) had a very nice patina to it. I had to spend 10 minutes on the strop to get it right again. Had I followed my own advice that would not have been required. Of course, some people here like a patina

Can I just add that it doesn't appear to rust as easily as SR101 or 1095 for that matter ! I was also amazed at the edge holding, admittedly I mainly use mine for battoning which doesn't wear the edge as much as cutting but even so it is impressive stuff !!!

S77 not only holds an edge reasonably well, it tastes fantastic too! Kinda like chicken and waffles...

Last time I was in L.A., I had some roscoe's house of chicken and waffles. Was that what you were referring to?

Sure, though I find their chicken only adequate. Their waffles topped off by their homemade syrup are excellent, however. I was actually referring to Knight & Winan's joint in DC. Dropped by during an Right Coast trip this year. Big wings for a big appetite...
