LOL...Cheers and welcome Toast!

I take that comment in the spirit it was given. I like it too. It really does have nice balance to it and the blade shaves arm hair in rows! But it is a bit heavy. The Spalted Maple helps bring some weight back into the handle and off the blade, but it's still front heavy and wants to dig into my arm when shaving that way.

The more I hold it the more pleased I am with the whole project. I only wanted to kill some time when I started, then it became a passion as it started to take shape. Thanks again for the kind words.

Perhaps now that we have some more time I can do a Drop Point Hunter. I always wanted to try my luck at that too.

Peace.

I think your work looks amazing for a first knife. Using 440A makes good sense for that type of knife anyway, regardless of the lower price of the steel. That is a hard use survival type knife and needs toughness over edge holding anyway.
Great job. I guarantee that it will cut better than the TOPS model, which requires a whole lot of regrinding to make useful.

That looks awesome POP, amazing work !!!!

I have to ask though, why 440A ?

Pit,440A because it was so cheap and when talking to customer service at Admiral Steel the sales rep had built his own knives and recommended it highly for a "first knife" because it is so forgiving.
It is softer and easier to work with than the newer "Super Steels" like S30V,CPM154,154CM,and the Japanese steels. He assured me I could hide mistakes easier and when I talked to him I wanted to "Mirror Polish" my Tracker.
It was only after I was done and buffing out the heat treat blackness that I decided to only Satin finish the blade due to the abuse I would heap on it.

Easy to sharpen in the field if needed and if I ever change my mind I can mirror it in less than an hour. Can't do that with the harder steels. So that's why I chose 440A. oh... and I have many other blades in 440 and all take a insane edge!

I am continually amazed at the talent here in the yard. I agree with Coyotebc, A great knife for any try, an amazing knife for a 1st try. So what are you going to make next?

A Drop Point Hunter.

I hope.

I really like the "Loveless" Semi-Skinner , the integral bolsters drive me crazy. I think that project is years away though. The simple Hunter in 1085 High Carbon sounds like a simple not so time intensive project to tackle before Christmas.

Next knife I don't want so many headaches with. Still have brain damage from that Tracker. But for me it was a passion as much as a mission to complete the right way the first time.
It cost a total of $90.00 and about 40 hours of real solid concentration. I bore easy and am very impatient.

Being here in The Yard since 2006 I have learned to be much more patient.

So 1085 and a simple Hunter sounds about right!

Thanks again for the encouragement guys.

Peace.

Ever since I saw that movie with Tommy Lee Jones I wanted a Tracker.
The Hunted is what got me into knives, in my search for that Knife I stumbled into The Swamp and Blade Forums and the rest as they say is history. I still don't have one of those knives but, who needs them when you have The Bussekins.
