Did anybody used or tested a Boney Active Duty or any other knife in INFI at 60-62 RC hardness?
I feel the need for a small size knife and I don't know if it's what i want. I should like something which cuts and holds an edge (most of the time I will use it for simple cutting) but I also want to be able to do more with it.

The BAD is advertised as "not intended for being abused", so I wonder what exactly does it mean or at which point is it suitable to resist. Is its edge going to resist if I cut cans with it? Is it going to resist if I implant the tip in material (for example wood) by hammering the end of the handle if I do it carefully? What should I expect from an Active Duty and what can it handle other than simple cutting in soft material?

Any opinion from anybody who ever used fully-hardened INFI would be helpfull.

Thanks in advance!

The BAD is a great knife. I don't think the question is about holding an edge. It's fairly thin and the "not intended for being abused" means potential tip damage or the like. I wouldn't worry about it though unless you are going to stab or pry. The Combat Grade AD has a thicker stock and the tip is much thicker and can be used hard. By the way, I sold my BAD, got a Yark Keeper and haven't looked back. Saved a few hundred bones in the process..

I have a Active Duty, and it's a pretty thick little blade. I believe the Game Warden is even thicker.

I would hammer my regular AD into wood but I probably would not hammer my BAD into wood unless it was an emergency. The BAD is very thin and therefore a dedicated slicer. It is also hardened to a greater degree which improves edge retention but likely makes it more brittle. If you use a knife for cutting/slicing you won't have any trouble at all with the BAD... just be careful using it as a wedge or crowbar.

I've had AD and Meaners and I liked the Meaner a bit more. It would be harder to conceal though. I wouldn't hesitate beating on the AD or the Meaner, I have not had a BAD but it sounds like a slicer.

What VoxHog said; if you want a small knife that you can open crates with or pry open doors, then the "standard" AD is a knife for you. I've read that they're quite popular with Military personnel who want a very tough knife that doesn't fall into the Rambo category.

The BAD is tough for a knife that will be used as a knife, but it is not intended to be used as a chisel or a prybar. Personally, I think they're great, but I'm a city boy. The writeup on the Busse Company Store is:

Quote
Here's a new take on the Active Duty. The Boney Active Duty featured here is a super thin slicer and dicer with a full flat grind at 1/8th inch!
.
The BAD's are mission specific designed to be wicked slicers!
.
We have bumped the hardness on these to 60-62 rc for better wear resistance when cutting softer materials and in order to better support the extra fine point and edge.
.
These by far are the thinnest ground EDC blades to ever leave the Busse Shop. The edge of the primary bevel is ground down to .012 - .015 prior to sharpening and the distal taper extends nearly the full length of the cutting edge!
.
The tips are VERY fine and are not designed for prying or heavy abuse... No worries though. If you find yourself in a precarious situation and need to abuse your BAD, you are still covered by our warranty..
If you're considering a BAD, you might also look for a Scrap Yard Mud Puppy LE (if you can find one). It's got a similar blade shape (in 154CM stainless) and a super comfy mudder Res-C handle.

Or is INFI so uber-fantastic that, regardless of the size of the knife and what it's designed to be used for, it's the only alloy worth considering regardless of cost?

Philistine!

Of course INFI is the only good steel in the world, where have you been for the last 20 years Bruce?!

if you can't do a pullup on that knife, why bother paying for infi? yeah, yeah, warranty...

it's a collector's knife. granted so were my FBM's, but i'm down to one and it's a user.

get a mora 510 or 545. if you want somethin higher end see if koster has any 3V bushcrafts in stock.

I have 2 Game Wardens...only Busse INFI I have, but I like them. Might look for an SS4. It weighs less than a Game Warden!
