Okay... experts... What is your preferred material used in pants for the Scrap Muk.... leather or Kydex? Does it matter regarding 154CM? Thanks for the info.... gRat.

Leather is a lifetime heirloom when it comes from Rainwalker. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Kydex...anyone can melt plastic. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
It takes great patience, skill and dedication to do with leather that which Jeff does. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif" alt="" />
Leather is what I have coming. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
Peace.

the leather i've been seeing on this forum has had me drooling. if i could aford it i'd have leather and kydex for every one of my knives. also could get creepy because i'd be thinking whether or not my steel wants to look kinda sexy today. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />

I'll toss a vote for the opposing side as it seems to be poorly represented. Synthetic sheaths are immune to wet and rot, and are well suited to a knife that you intend to take out and use a lot. Sure, leather sheaths look great, but I would not take a hand made leather sheath out in the woods to get covered in sweat, mud, pitch, and general filth.

Leather tends to be more comfortable to wear especially in larger blade sizes because it has some "give". Leather is also the most pleasing to look at and it can be customized to your whims.
However, for any harsh environment involving serious rain or an environment involving lots of sand/grit/dirt/blood then I prefer Kydex.
I see the Muk as a great hunting knife/skinner so I would be biased to choose Kydex just because it's easier to clean. Leather would obviously work too but you need to be conscientious about cleaning the blade before sheathing it.

PoP - "Leather is NOT just for the bedroom"?!? Why, you old Devil! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> I agree that if the knife is going to be continuously exposed to really rough weather/environments kydex might be the way to go. However, I still prefer leather and just cleaning my blades after use. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

For the Scrapmuk..
Ok now, and I mean this jokingly - I think it would look good in one of those canvas organized roll ups that has sewn various sized sections for all of your "surgical instruments" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Leather vs Kydex in general though. Leather has been around for about as long as we've had "tools" so I wouldn't be afraid to get it dirty. A good kydex sheath is going to hold on to/lock the knife in which means you can couple it with more mounting options - depending on the size. I think the list can go on and on with type of knife and intended use but don't forget to include the craftsman. Just started playing with Kydex myself and if a buddy approached me to make a sheath for them I'd point them to Rainwalker first unless they were just looking for a no frills cover for their edge.

Leather for my knives. No other options for me. Just like the look.

Kydex is better from some guys than others no doubt. Not all kydex is equal either, I've had some that was too thin for my taste.
Kydex is great if you plan on swimming or diving or washing it etc.
Leather is great, beautiful, smells good. Kydex isn't junk though, it has its place. It is also much less costly.
Also, if I went to say Iraq. I would rather have a pistol in a nice Blade-Tec holster than leather.
