Everybody needs one. It is the SKS of rimfires. The rifle of the people's militia. And a Mini-14.

Is that one of the McGizmo? lights?

Yes, it's a Haiku. I have this titanium flashlight fetish I don't like to discuss in public.

I now have a REM.597 in .22mag...This thing is BAD....Keeps 5rds inside a quarter @100yds....consistantly. It's a heavy Barrel/laminated stck (heavy)8.4lbs w/scope. little recoil and fast on target. But survival rifle??? only if your surviving in one spot...for the duration.

What about an SKS. It uses the same ammo as an AK and are still fairly cheap to obtain. IMO they can take a beating and are fairly accurate at less than 100 yards.

I'm still debating between a handgun or rifle first, but if I get a rifle, it's a tossup between the ruger 10/22 or sig (both shoot .22lr).

MRpink, I would go with the 10/22 out your choices because there are so many parts and options out there for them. Another thing is the Sig might not be CA DOJ compliant since it is supposed to have a folding stock, removable magazine, flash hider, etc, and it would have to pass the drop test. Look into the laws there but that is what a friend of mine that is stationed out there was telling me.

For a first rifle, a good bolt action is hard to beat. Simple, reliable, and most shoot well right out of the box. Plus you can clean them easily from the breech without worrying about screwing up the crown.

If you can find a CZ 452 in 22lr that DOES shoot (sorry Vic!) that would be a fantastic choice. Ditto the Ruger 77/22 for which there is also a very good aftermarket for upgrade parts.

If you want to fly first class get an Anschutz. In that stratosphere a Sako (the Quad is very cool) or Kimber are also nice choices. And Ken Lunde will tell you how great Coopers are.

Oh Coopers, that is a different realm for sure. I have had the chance to fire a couple Coopers in centerfire and would love to try one in rimfire. But for my wallet I think I will continue bot buying the Cooper Kool=Aid.
