I have noticed from several people's posts that they have the SAK Rescue Tool in their collection. I really like the idea of a one handed opening SAK. I was curious if anyone had the SAK Soldier and what they thought about it. To me it seems like essentially the same knife for about half the price. Also, any comments or opinions on either knife would be appreciated. Also, has scrapyard ever made a folder?

Hi, Just received my '09 Victorinox Soldier (latest model) & I am very very impressed with it. The one handed opening is slick & the knife feels good in the hand.
The Rescue Tool is rather chunkier & has added features such as glass breaker & glass saw.
For me the Soldier is a better bet!
Cheers, JB

Welcome to the Yard BTW.

I don't have a rescue tool, but I have the OHT (One Hand Trekker), the German equivalent (it's called a GAK) and I have a couple of soldiers. The OHT (4 1/2 inches closed) is similar in size to the Rescue tool (4 3/8 inches closed). The Trekker size SAK's are a bit large for the pocket so I tend to carry the soldier style blades more. I carry the OHT size SAK's in a sheath, my man purse or a pack.

I actually carry a farmer most of the time because it adds the saw to the soldier essentially. The SAK's saws work really well. If you are planning on carrying the knife in a sheath or you don't mind a thick folder handing out in your pocket, then the rescue might be the ticket. Google "Felinevet Sosak" and you can check out all sorts of cool models and compare sizes. Amazon sometimes has great deals on SAK's as well.

Scrapyard has never made a folder.

I have the Vic Rescue and love it. A fellow dawg gave me a heads up that it was on sale at amzon for like $38.95 including shipping. Great deal. I am going to order the Farmer as it does look to be a better idea for an EDC. The Vic is pure quality IMO-Thanks

I agree, Victorinox is pure quality.

The third Vic that I have is the Vic Spirit, my favorite multitool. Pick one of Farmer/OHT/Spirit, depending on what you are doing, and you always have an appropriate toolbox.

I also have a Leatherman Squirt S4 on my keychain along with a Suunto Micro Compass and a Fenix LoD. Basic bases coverd. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

im the odd man out.
i had a farmer & gave it away.
the nail nick was to small for me to be able to open the main blade. i much prefer the one hand open models.if i am carrying a VIC it is going to be a GAK..

& the saw does work very well j33ps

this thread should probably be in the "outdoors" section but...

I have an OHT and the Rescue Tool, backups to my fixed blades.
the RT is heavier and thicker than the OHT and Soldier and is made
for emergency situations, a beefier/specialized OHT. The Soldier
has grippier scales but basically the same as an OHT.

The RT has a specialized glass breaker and glass cutter/saw that are
removeable. It also comes with very bright stay-glow scales that
last a long time. It was made with emergency people to better help
them in emergency situations, that's why it's more expensive
(unless you find a deal!)

The OHT and Soldier have a wood saw, the RT does not and the glass
cutter would work poorly for this, but both can be used for rural
or urban environments.

The OHT comes in PE and combo edges and round and oval holes.
I keep my RT in the car and my OHT in my pocket.

I really like the saw on my gerber legend (original version - I've heard the quality control has gone down in more recent runs).

The reason I really like the saw is that the saw is whatever I want it to be. The tool has an adapter that takes a standard jigsaw blade, so it can be replaced easily. I usually put an aggressive wood-cutting blade in there, but have been known to carry finer blades if I'm working around metal a lot in the lab. I EDC'ed the legend for several years and it's still my go-to when I need a multi-tool.
