I did not want to buy leather over the internet, because I wanted to find the right thickness by feeling it in my hands. I found a small leather store on 27th St and 8th Ave in Manhattan, close to my office. They sell rolls or scraps and I just pick up a few scraps there every now and then (I use vegetable tanned leather only). If you go to Bladeforums or Knifeforums (tutorial sections) I am sure you will find many links for buying leather on line. I prefer 7-8 ounces but you could probably work with thinner leather although the danger of cutting through the leather when sheathing the knife becomes a reality, for me at least. Any thicker and it will become difficult to fold a pouch style sheath.
As for the fasteners, I got aluminum fasteners at the local hardware store – they are called Binding Screws or Post Screws or Chicago Screws, depending on where you buy them. I do not like the aluminum ones and will drive to the nearest Tractor Supply Company over the coming weekend to get me some brass screws. They will be both stronger and look better than the aluminum ones. I believe Binding Screws are as strong as rivets and much easier to use. Just remember to add some Loctite when you fasten them, otherwise they will come loose.
Cheers, Gideon

I love my SAR. The best watch I've ever owned and very tough. And I love the automatic movement too. I decided on the traditional lumination as I have a Traser watch with tritium tubes and after about 9 years of wear they really started to faint out. Still, very neat way of luminating. Mine wasn't around long enough to ever fade but I knew it would. Perhaps if I would have bought the SAR I would have kept it. I've been very happy with my modded Seiko and when it returns from the shop hopefully I will be more happy. Have you worn it with the rubber strap? It is very easy to change with the drilled through lugs. I had the bracelet and strap and the strap was actually more comfortable.

Ahhh , the creative side of Gideon...good to see. I, also like build ,designing and crafting part, sheaths and knives....but I can't compete with Busse or Scrapyard....so until I can , I'll use theirs. I can only use soooo many knives....so I'll use the BEST. Man has to know his limitations. Nice work by the way....Rainwalker would be proud.

That is a nice looking custom blade that you created. I really enjoyed the photos that walk through the complete process - it really helps mechanically-challenged people like myself as I try to follow the progression. Thanks!

Gideon I really like that design a lot, if I get a leather sheath it will probably be one like that.

You did a really great job with that....You have skills...If I had tried that, the blade would be bent, I would have lost one scale, and super glued the other..backwards...and the leather sheath? It would still moo if I put my hands on it...I appreciate craftsmanship....Again...great job..

Nice work Gideon! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> I agree with you on the 8 ounce leather - plenty tough but workable. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I've eyed those kits from Ben's too. Great site, and great guy to deal with. Never had any problems with anything, even shipping to Canada.
I like that sheath design. Looks very versatile. Like you, I've wanted to learn how to make sheaths, just for my own interest, but never seem to get the time, so I've been leaving sheath work up to the pro's. Got a couple in transit from Jeff and can't wait for them to get here.
Great work Gideon.
Cheers
