I am stunned with the events at Ft. Hood yesterday. My prayers go out to all involved. Now what I don't understand is the FBI knew about this guy for a while, the Army knew about this guy, and nothing happened. What a waste, just another example of bureaucracy at its finest.

I've been in a lot of different projects - all of them are broadly under the umbrella of "soft condensed matter".
Translated into English, SCM basically means "squishy stuff". That is, stuff that's somewhere in between liquid and solid, and has funky properties of both of them. Although I don't study them directly, my work has had connections to things like creams, gels, foams, emulsions, etc etc etc.
Most people think of physics and think of either rockets launched at the moon, or high energy physics where you're working on particle accelerators. That's definitely NOT what I do.
