Cool..It's in the beginning stages. Once someone perfects it, and makes it more refined, it could be useful. Not quite ready for primetime yet.

Useful? Not likely. It's a neat physics demo, but that's about it. You can build a vortex cannon with some cardboard and scraps of stuff you probably have around the house. It's a neat effect with more range than you would intuitively expect from a burst of moving air, but the physics of it are well understood and it would be so incredibly inefficient in terms of energy use that it's highly unlikely to find any practical use.

However, they are really fun to play with. You can blow out a candle from across a room with a well built homemade version

The Germans experimented with vortex cannons in WWII for anti-aircraft weapons.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

They also tried to develop psychic powers, too... how'd that work out for 'em?

I don't know about the psychic powers thing, but the vortex weapon was not effective. The V-2 rocket thing seemed to work pretty well for them.

Yeah no matter what fancy crap the defense contractors come up with, a bunch of fire shooting out the back of a tube full of explosives seems pretty tough to top. Sometimes simple and to the point is the best way to get the job done.
