We had 6 or 7 yotes tear apart a pitbull just down the raod from us summer before last

The funny thing, we went out there every morning very early for a while. We only saw one from about 500 yards running flat out. He must have spotted us or smelled us up on the hay stack.

Actually, one of the reasons that the coyotes might have gotten to be a real problem right there was that we were shooting tons of rock chucks. This guy had a real problem with them in his pastures, and had never done any population control. For a while, there was a real supply of food for the coyotes from us killing the chucks. It was an odd area for the chucks because there was not a huge rock pile, just some large sheets of stone that in spots that they had burrowed under. It meant that when we caught them out in the field eating in the mornings, they did not fall down in the rock piles when shot. So there was a nice meal just laying out for the coyotes.


It is not that bad these days


Once(this was about 6 years before the incident in the farmers back yard), when I was over night at a friends house for his birthday (really young then), their dogs were barking at something in the yard. Then it sounded like a hell of a fight.

He had a hound dog mut, a smaller mut, and a German Shepard.

Only the German Shepard and the smaller mut made it back to the house (this was about 30 miles out in the country, no neighbors for quite a ways).

Early the next morning we went out and just found a bunch of blood and fur, never found the rest of the hound dog. Just the dog tracks and tons of coyote tracks, and a bunch of blood and fur. We had our rifles, but did not find any of the coyotes. They were probably napping, after having a big meal of hound dog.

Well I saw a rifle today that may hold some promise. A Savage that has a older Simmons Aetec scope that has been home camoed. The thing does not have an accu=trigger but it is in .243 Win. May do some reading to see if the triggers can be spruced up.

Those Simmons Aetec scopes are great scopes for the money. Heck, they're great scopes period. It's hard to go wrong with a Savage in a .243 Win. That package sounds like the ticket.

With a bit of google foo, you can find drop-in triggers, trigger-jobs and smiths who will install an accu-trigger in your rifle. An accutrigger is about 125.00 installed.

K, thanks. I did a little reading last night and found a trigger called Basix. Now i have to talk myself out of the DPMS Camo rifle in 243 that is sitting on the wall--the scope is some monster from Russia and Nikon would set the cost above what I want to get into it for.

Along with my Remington 700CDL in .257 Weatherby, I hunt with a Remington R-25 in .243 win (It's a re-branded DPMS). It's a PERFECT Coyote gun. With the 58 Gr. Hornady V-Max bullets, it knocks coyotes down with authority. Fast, flat and quick follow-up shots and little recoil. The only downside I can see is the weight. Although, the weight makes watching the "splash" and hits easier because it reduces felt recoil.

That's a helluva hole in that Coyote, K. Not too shabby

The optic is a Bushnell Elite 6500 4.5 x 30 x 50. It has mil-dot reticle. I really like that scope. My other scope is a Leupold VXIII with a Big Game Reticle. As far as clarity, they are on par at similar magnification. I rarely use the 30 power on my Bushnell. I have used it to look count points on antlers and at the bench at times to look at holes. Most of the time, I keep it from 6-12 power. So, for the most part, that extra power is not used, but it's nice to have when I need it.

Thanks. I just got back from a hunt a few minutes ago. We called in two big yotes, but my nephew (12 years old) took the shot and missed at 100 yards. They are really vocal this time of year because they are in mating season. Great time to get out there and hunt.
