While we were anticipating the release of the new Regulators, Dan announced that he was going to have a batch of them as military over runs. That got me to thinking about the sacrifice that our men and women in uniform make for us. I was also feeling a bit guilty that I have never served, myself. In the process of thinking about what a great knife this would be for our troops I mentioned in a post that I wanted to donate a regulator to a needy soldier as a small token of my gratitude for their service.

I don't really know how to go about doing this, so I was hoping for some ideas from some of you dogs.
I would like to try to find an active combat soldier that is fairly newly deployed and doesn't have a good quality knife already. I have a brand new Regulator and sheath that I would like to send directly to his military address so he can have it asap while still deployed. I guess it could be someone that is about to be deployed also. Maybe some of you even know of a worthy candidate.

Any thoughts?

About the only soldiers who would carry such a knife are infantry or special operations serving in a combat zone. Possesion of such weapons on most bases by most military personnel is prohibited. Best check with the soldier, airman, sailor, or marine first.

I'm trying to get one to someone that would actually use it in the field. When Dan said he had military orders I guess I assumed most any soldier could have one. Heaven forbid our men and women that are trained to fight and kill should be trusted with sharp objects.

You would be surprised how PC some commands are. It depends on the unit and where they are. Most combat units would allow a large fixed blade in the field. Best check with the service member first before sending the knife, is all I'm saying.

My bossman bought one, sending to his son in Afghanistan. But he is an MP, so large fixed blades are OK with his unit.

But he did have to ask approval from his CO for it.

Horn Dog makes a very good point. Ask first.

My daughter graduates next week from AF Basic and then on to Tech School (Intel) for 4.5 months. She can have a pocket knife of 3" blade or less there. None at basic. When she deploys, who knows?

I thought that some of our fellow Dogs had a brother in the sandbox - THAT would be a great gesture for both. Kudos to you and your desire to help equip a Marine, Soldier, or whoever with a great knife!!!

I looked at the anysoldier.com site and in light of the comments about needing approval etc. this is becoming more difficult than I thought. I do not know anyone in the military but I just thought, find out the address of someone in the combat zone and send it to him with a letter thanking him for his service. Unless a dog here knows someone personally that can use one, and have one I guess I will just make a $ donation to the anysoldier.com or wounded warrior project.

P.S. Horndog no disrespect to your daughter, I referred to the masculine gender about sending the knife as I was still under the impression that females were not involved in active combat. Thank her for her service also.

I think sending knives to soldiers is a great idea, skorpyd. If anyone knows some servicemen serving over in Afghanistan or Iraq now, I'd be pleased to help out. I have many more knives than I will ever need.

As for females in combat, they all get the basic combat training now, even in the Air Force. Things have changed radically since I was in the AF. In fact, the AF actually has some female snipers in their Security Forces now. There are no front lines in modern warfare.

I have connections with 10th group SF. If anyone is interested I could let them see what they are and find out if the CO or First Shirt has anyone in need. But I haven't met a SF soldier that didn't have a good knife already.

It's a great idea if they can carry it
My fiancee's nephew is deploying to afganastan in a couple of days and loves knives. He is in the navy (seabee) and said they were under a 4" blade length restriction so I gave him a benchmade 710 as a gift he said I made his day. Giving our troops good tools is a great way to support them

JYD#14 Do you need one, of course you do it's a knife and you like knives.....
