That sounds like Negligence to me. Where were the guides? Aren't they supposed to be watching out for signs of this sort of thing? My NCOs can do it while getting shot at, how come these guys couldn't do it during a hike? The guide was right next to him with a canteen of emergency water as far as I can tell from the articles I read. He asked for help and the guide basically told him to suck it up an keep going.

yeah, that was negligence. maybe not on the schools part, but that was definitely the fault of the guide. Some people can't hack it, and I know that the signs of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and severe dehydration aren't difficult to spot, especially heat stroke. No one is a better indicator about how a person feels health wise then the individual, you can't ignore it when someone asks for help. It's really sad this guy went out to have fun and learn, and wound up dead.

SOMETIMES being to MACHO is nothing more than stupidity. I am not really sure what happened here as I did not "follow" it. But speaking from my own experience, being a "man's man" can get you killed or at least hurt.

True that. As I've learned, when it comes down to surviving, things you wouldn't normally do for fear of being chastized by "civilized" individuals go right out the window when it's the only thing keeping you alive. Sharing body heat immediately comes to mind. You gotta do what you gotta do. Bravado goes hand in hand with this. better to be timid and safe, than to be cocky and dead.

ESEE, formerly RAT (Randall's Adventure and Training)knives, gives some survival courses that I have heard are pretty good. Check them out.

Thanks to all for the comments and suggestions.
I've checked around and most people give good reviews to BOSS even though the one guide was negligent. Also I kind of doubt it will EVER happen again in that school. ESEE looks great as well

I bought their book from Mike Perrin at Blade 08' and it was interesting. However, it dealt with mainly South American trips. I would be more interested in a course more directed toward North American situations.

I just went to the ESEE woodlands course in april,, it was a blast and learned some great stuff from some really good people. I would recommend it to anyone interested in taking a course. I will be going back for some other courses they offer in the future.
