Finished the notch in the bone to house the blade, and began work-hardening the copper plate that will be the blade.

Then I started thinking...

...and thinking some more...

I intend to epoxy the blade into the handle, but adding that wrap around it would definitely improve my peace of mind. I'd use a tough synthetic monofilament, like dacron, or maybe some of the ridiculously tiny poly-coated steel cable they sell for doing necklaces. Clipping the tab off like that makes the knife nicer to hold in anything other than a simple fist, but I'm not sure I like what I did as far as tapering the rear the of the blade inward like that.

I'm not going to commit to cutting my precious copper plate until I'm happy with my cardboard mockup. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I think this blade shape is better looking, IMHO.

You're certainly off to a great start. I'm excited to see the finished product.

Wow,can't wait to see it finished.
Have you thought about sinew,or artificial sinew for the wrap?

I was gonna suggest the exact thing Myke. I have a Rosary I had made of elk bone and sinew and it really looks nice. It's not regular and symmetrical, but it has a really nice look and feel to it that I really enjoy.

I've never used artificial sinew, can you give me a rundown on its properties?

It's not just for sewing though, makes a great wrap too.My brother made obsidian arrow heads & the occasional knife blade & used the artificial sinew on the knives, looked great.

Shaped. I know the metal sticks out a little along the handle, but not enough to be annoying. It fits so nicely that I don't want to mess around with it more. :P

Was playing with ideas to decorate the blade. If I do something like this I think I'll round off the spine so it arcs smoothly to the tip instead of having that kink in there.
