The word puukko is quite often used here as a universal word for knife of any type. I had to explain my wife that puukko is a knife but not every knife is a puukko.

I understand what you are saying. Around here it is very common to ask some one if they want a coke and then ask the what kind. Coke is many times used as a generic term for a soda.
