Guess it's time to delurk and reveal myself.

My name is Bill and I have a few knives by various makers and have been looking for some bomb proof survival knives for outdoors use. (I'm a chef and have been using knives indoors pretty much all day every day for the past 35 years).

I've received my new DFLE and Scrapper 6 CG today, and am working on closing the deal on a SOD LE. I read around a lot and have come to the armchair conclusion that these may be as good as it gets for real world use knives. Infi steel is amazing, but it seems like many who can afford it aren't necessarily out using it. I really don't know that I could bring myself to start whacking on a stump with a $700 piece of steel that hadn't touched anything but a sheath before. But I have seen a video of a FBM LE splitting a human hair, so we'll see if the DFLE is enough knife for me to resist temptation (I hope that it is).

The edge on the DFLE is shaving sharp. What a beautiful knife. I am interested to see how long the edge holds up after all that I have read about it. I am comfortable with my sharpening skills, and the steel looks great. The edge is nice, if a bit rough, I think it would benefit from some simple fine stone work to just polish it. I really like the edge on that one.

The edge on the Scrapper 6 is not very sharp. It is ground at a much higher angle, but I think that I can just change the angle a bit and it will be very sharp as well. That is if I can bring myself to use these knives in the field as well. It appears that (I'm guessing now) SY may have changed the angle a bit on their edges as they evolved to make them sharper from the factory. I know a lot of people expect a knife to be a sharp, static form when they first receive it.

I was wondering if I might have preferred to get the Scrapper in le as opposed to cg. I guess that it will be nice to have some of each so I can see how they work out.

At any rate, it is plain that it is going to take considerable effort to do any harm at all to any of these knives, they are obviously some tough stuff. I think that I made the right choice of Busse variety given my intended use.

Now that I'm "out," I'd like to thank you guys, Horn Dog in particular, for popping up repeatedly in all of my google searches and helping me to get to "here."

Sorry for the long winded intro, I'm looking foward to your comments and getting to know you all.

Bill

Bill, Welcome! You HAVE made a good choice. I Have the following Bussekin blades.

Dog Father CG = Unparalled chopper.

Weiner Dog, Great "Kitchen" knife, specially in the outdoors, and a real good all round user.

MPLE= What can I say, a FANTASTIC 3 1/2 inch prybar of a knife that is so useful it is crazy.

Swamp Warden = a 3 inch skelly blade that is another fantistic EDC

Mil Reg= Bomb proof "Bowie" IT WILL DO EVERYTHING in the outdoors and HAS hacked apart a car and only broke on the bumper mounting bracket!

S5= a 5 inch FANTASTIC Bushcrafter type blade.

You can't go wrong with ANY Bussekin blade, and Welcome to the Glorious Addiction!

Bill - welcome to the Yard and the addiction!

About three years ago I started looking for Bombproof survival knives to replace the various Benchmade, Buck, Gerber, Smith & Wesson, SOG, USGI knives I had when I found www.knifetests.com . That website steered my research toward Bussekin knives, and the rest as they say is history.

You've absolutely made the right decision. ScrapYard and Swamp Rat knives are indestructible, and have astounding edge retention.

I've posted pics of my Mil Reg after batoning with it for 3 or 4 straight days (cold weather camping trip)...the edge was still "paper curling" sharp .

Like SH above, I have quite a few different Bussekin now....

SYKC Yard Keeper LE
SYKC Mil Regulator
SYKC DogFather CG
SYKC Son of a DogFather CG
SYKC Scrapper 5 CG
SwampRat Swamp Warden
SwampRat Chopweiler
SwampRat RatManDu
SwampRat RatManDu LE (Pre-Ordered)

I'm probably forgetting something.

Anyway, I EDC a Swamp Warden AND a Scrapper 5 or RatManDu, and have selected the Chopweiler as my primary survival fixed blade. My wife EDC's a SwampWarden and selected the SOD as her primary fixed blade.

We use MOST of our knives around the house and while backpacking/camping/hiking. I'm simply amazed at what they will take. To date, the only "damage" I've been able to inflict on my knives is finish wear .

You'll notice the fanatic love for all things ScrapYard here, because Dan's a very nice guy...the Yard is full of awesome friends...and the steel is legendary. You have chosen well.

Good job Arch. The only addition I would make is to say that the knife
Son of the Dogfather is mostly called the SOD! And then again If he has been "Lookin around" here some, he already knows that anyway. It's a good thing you spelled it all out though or someone might see the SOD and say HUH?

Thanks Randy. I know when my addiction started I spent a lot of time googling different acronyms trying to figure out what everyone was talking about so I thought I'd write it all out.

I still don't know what 90% of the Busse Combat abbreviations mean

I know what you mean. I dont' worry about the Busse Combat ones cause I can't afford them anyway! The Yard ones I am PRETTY familar with and the Swamp Rat ones I mostly have down.

Randy - ditto brother! I'd love to have a few INFI blades, but they're out of my price range.

I have all of the standard SY abbreviations down, but some of the rare "show only" blades I'm not too sure about (there seem to be a lot of Mutt variants). I'm pretty good on SwampRat's abbreviations too, but some of the early stuff is hard to research.

There used to be a site called "The Swamp" that showed all the older Swamp Rat blades but I just went to it in my Favorites and it isn't there anymore.

ANYBODY KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO "THE SWAMP" SITE? Boy We could really use Andy now!

Never heard about the Devil's club. It's a good one, but I like mine better, it is more accurately indicates the REAL mental capabilities (or lack of actually)!
