Isn't the 17 a lot more destructive than the 22?

Thanks for the compliments. I really like the 10/22 rebuilds. I have shot many 10 shot/50 yd bench groups that were .25" edge to edge. That is all day pot-meat shooting (even though I don't hunt anymore).

The Ruger 10/22 platform has so many available parts and so many tweaks that you can improve the accuracy with some aluminum shims from a soda pop can and a torque wrench. Many bolt actions are more accurate out of the box (like Savage and CZ) but it was a lot of fun dropping from 2 MOA groups to 1/2 MOA with some workshop time and a few parts.

I swear that my 10/22 shoots as well as my Remington 40X did and way , way less expensive.

I like the .17 calibers but the ammo isn't cheap when you compare it to a .223 - but it is a lot safer that a centerfire if you are shooting around the farm, less recoil, less noise, and a much lighter rig.

I think that the .17 is a great multipurpose round and fits the niche that it was intended to fill. But when I go out, I really like being able to blow through 500 vrounds of .22 LR - and I really miss the days of the $10 bricks of ammo from Kmart.

Randy, if you use the V-Max ammo or other ballistic tips, it is. But when I use it for squirrel hunting I'm pretty particular about shot placement, and I use FMJ ammo and go for head shots only. Plus I have to make sure I have a good shot with them against a tree or on the ground, since I don't want a FMJ round to be going through and hitting something else.

But I kill squirrels regularly waaaayyyyy outside my comfort zone with the .22 Ruger I usually carry. I can get a head shot at 100 yards pretty easily with the .17 HMR.

Well I am going to show my ignorance here. I thought the .17 WAS a centerfire round.

So what is a good 17hmr for less than $400?
