Want some free marksmanship training for your youth and female significant other?

It seems that most of you have similar hobbies as myself. I would like to encourage one and all to try to find an Appleseed shoot in your area to hone or learn from scratch incredible rifle marksmanship skills. It is a combination of old school sling on the bicep marksmanship training from the standing, sitting, rapid fire prone, and slow fire prone. You can do all of it with a .22 LR but if you go to a range that allows centerfire you can shoot it with your AR, M1, etc. if you want. It is taught by volunteers with the utmost in safety. Law Enforcement and soldiers are also free along with youth and all women. I have taken a lot of training and I still learned a bunch over the two days and earned my Rifleman patch. There are brief stories of Revolutionary War history surrounding rifleman at Lexington and Concord during the break times. There are shoots in every state. I've participated in two of them. As for being basic, yes it is.

BUT, Apple Seed shoots stress the principles of marksmanship and that has never changed and it never will.

Scopes/red-dots/etc will always go down; irons (generally) will not.

Good course, great folks....sign up for one. You will not be disapponited.

Women go free. My wife and I signed up last year but something came up. From what I hear it's a good basic introduction to high power type shooting. I have a marlin with the tech sights and I have a rear tech sight front/no dak spud sight on a heavy barrel 10/22. The little trainer 22s are a nice idea. I was busy the past couple of years by my gun club has a 22lr competition every summer and it's usually packed.

I have been to two AS shoots.

Great instructors with a little of our own history thrown in.

Basic? Perhaps a little but those who were never CORRECTLY taught the principles of markmanship will get a real education.

I used to use my M1 but with ammo prices, the Rugers/Marlins are now utilized.

I recommend the course to everyone!

I'm planning on taking my wife to AS shoot the next time it comes around. She finally decided she wants to learn to shoot. But I'm not always the best teacher. Plus I'm always up for learning stuff. Heck my dad wants to go.

You will learn plenty!

The staff (most, if not all, are former AS students) are informative & helpful.

If you want "high-speed-low-drag" this may not be the program for you.

if you want to learn the principles of marksmanship that led our country from the darkness of tyranny & opression to the light of liberty & freedom, this may be the program for you.

At an Appleseed Shoot, you will not find skinheads or racist militia yahoos.

Instead, you will encounter normal men, women, and well-behaved children, who respect & honor our Nation's history and who desire to promote those American values that made this nation great.

I would like to use my .22, but it is scope-only. I have an AR with irons that I would consider trying out.

I shot somewhere in the neighborhood of 400-450 rounds over a two-day course.

My two Appleseeds (2007-2008) consisted of about 30 M1A, 10-12 AR-15, 4-6 M1, and maybe 2-3 .22's (mostly 10/22).

Given the cost of factory centerfire ammunition these days, I would guess that the .22 is much more popular than ever.

There are some who would say that shooting a reduced head/shoulder target at 25 meters is not the same as hitting a full-sized target at 300...this is true to an extent.

Many variables come into play at such distances...wind direction & speed/bullet drop/etc.

However, without learning the basic principles of marksmanship to include the use of iron sights (scopes and red dots break, irons rarely do), the proper use of a sling, correct body position, cheek weld, sight picture, breath & trigger control, knowing how to adjust windage/elevation via minute of angle (MOA), a shooter may as well stay home and watch TV.

As for scopes, I've seen a few folks use them but they generally prefer the shooter to become proficient with iron sights.

AS shoots are not hard-core "sniper classes" that require the student to bring big dollar, high-tech gear.

Modern conveniences certainly have their place but by not learning the basic principles of marksmanship equates to a guy (or lady) who owns a rifle worth $$$ who doesn't know how to use it.

As I previously mentioned, the instructors throw in a little bit of our history...I was more than a little surprised at what our forefathers were capable of doing with a flintlock smoothbore muzzleloader at 300 yards while a bunch of guys in red coats were shooting back at them!

For the minimal fee charged to atttend, it is well worth it. AS shoots are very much about learning AND teaching. If you shoot "Rifleman" on your first attempt don't be surprised if an instructor approaches you and asks for YOU to organize an Appleseed program in your own community.

Learning is a great thing but a somewhat useless tool if you cannot impart that knowledge to others.

If I sound like a "fanboy" or "cheerleader" for these events it is because I am.

If we don't teach future generations these sound, simple, and important principles, who will?
