Timo it is also (and more often, maybe) know as a Kelly Kettle. And yes they are supposed to work really well.

BUT being hollow (the fire "Furnace") you can't actually cook IN them, just boil the water I THINK, from what I have read. But as I said above, they are supposed to work really well. that looks like a nice one, is it Stainless Steel or the Aluminum one?

Skunk you´re right. You can´t cook in them. Kelly or Ghillie kettle is more common name for that kind of kettles but they are also brands like the Storm Kettle. Trumby might know the Australian version of the design.

I was surprised how fast that thing is. And after you get the fire going (quite easy because of the strong draft) you can use moist twigs. No, I´m not saying they are good nor can you pick them up from a pond but from the ground and snow as I did.

They do sell cooking ware for these but they are quite small. My main goal was to get the water boiling so I can use it for expedition food, coffee, tea, etc. The fire in the kettle is very strong so it will heat up the base so you must be extra careful when using this in dry time.

This one is aluminium with black paint. I ordered this because it had a little bigger water volume than the similar sized Kelly`s. The diameter is 14cm.

For the typical "Boiling water" it is VERY fast and compact unit. Nothing wrong with it AND you can always store some wood/twigs inside the "chimney" so you will have try tinder to start your fire with. I had thought about getting one of those but have since found a good deal on a small cookware set (2 pans and a 1/2liter pot). Now all I need to do is get a 1 liter pot and that along with my 16 ounce ss cup and the cookware and I will be set, once I figure out what kind of a small "Stove" (wood burning) I want to get. I am thinking about one of these

Looks nice. That´s almost like a normal campfire.

Check this out:

I found more comments about Kelly kettles thatn this one and Kelly´s seemed to burn better in moist, windy and cold weather. I might try that other stove later...

That is pretty neat. I have seen other stoves sort of like that. The only thing I don't like is that you have to feed the fire from the top, which isn't really a hassle, but I just don't care for top feeders. I just like the ones you can feed from the bottom better, I THINK. Will need to do some more thinking/research.

It's better to have it & not need it, than to need it & not have it.
