I don't even enjoy DRIVING 100 miles in a day unless I'm on the motorcycle! Good luck to any and all that compete!

I would love to run Western States one day. A friend of mine, Joe McQuade, ran it this year. I have run 8 50ks and will run the Cheat Moonshine Madness 50 Miler in August with my wife. After that we will decide if we want to attempt the Umstead 100 miler next April. We live in WV and do a lot of trail running here and in Western Maryland. Most of the Ultras I want to run are out West.

I will do a 50k this year. My wife and I moved to Northern California partly for the trail running scene. Look me up if you are doing a race out here!

LOL, my mom and sister are pretty involved in working that race. They are more involved in the Tevis cup race though. Are you trying to get an entry from the lottery? That is awesome that your family is involved in Western States! I have not seen the Tevis cup, I will look it up. I will probably enter the next lottery, they are for like 2 years in advance because you have to do a qualifying run. I just have to do that race.

I would love to get out that way some day but right now I'm stuck on the East Coast. When you do your first 50k you'll love it. There is a lot of comradery in the ultra community and not a lot of egos. My wife and I are doing a 12 hour run this weekend. That is a great first ultra as you can do as much as you want in 12 hours and you can stop any time you want. It is a 6.5 mile loop, which you can run as many times as you want. They also have teams. I'm sure there are 12 hours run out there as well. The one we are doing is Big Bear 12 Hour Run. We are using it as a training run for our 50 miler next month so I don't plan on doing more than 32.5 miles, maybe 39. I have run 2 marathons and I like them but I like the trails more. They are less intense and I love running thru the woods. Keep us posted. Happy Trails! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

I always thought the ride and tie races were cool. They have one of those up here as well. The Western States started from the Tevis Cup when one of the racers horse couldn't make the race so he just decided to run the 100 mile course. The WS has become more popular than the Tevis now.

Thats right! I did not know the name of the horse race. The guy who started it is Gordy Ansleigh. His horse was lame so he could not ride, he walked and ran with his horse. The next year he did it all by himself. He still starts every race, he dropped out this year, On bad mofo! I think he is in his 60s! He is considered the pioneer of ultra trail running.
