In a digital world, I had to revert to an analog solution.
We planted a new tree in an area where we had an evergreen tree removed (drought victim). We started digging about 3 feet from the old stump ground trunk location. I told the wife we would have a lot of big roots to deal with but she wanted the new tree in that area.
About six inched below grade we found the first of many roots to follow. My wife tells the son to get the cordless sawz-all (reciprocating saw) to cut the roots. After exhausting the second battery, I went and grabbed the axe. 20 minutes of axe work far exceeded the amount of cutting from the sawz-all.
What I failed to realize is that my son had no idea of how to use the axe. Bad daddy on my part, but remedied quickly yesterday. After a few demos’ and some encouragement, he quickly got the swing of things and did a great job. He seemed to enjoy the efforts too.
My point of this story is: How many folks don’t mind gun/knife restrictions because they never where taught to use or where associated with either in their younger days?
Remember this: Everytime I blink, you disappear.

the axe is such a valuable tool. i regret that i didn't familiarize myself with a lot of the old tools when i was young. although he is handy, my father's tool collection isn't very impressive. he didn't know his own father well as he died young and has only a handful of tools that were passed down to him.
in fact, i found the heads of a peen hammer and claw hammer hiding in one of his toolboxes, rehandled both of them for my father as a birthday gift a few years back. turns out they both belonged to his father.
i think much of the protectionist attitude comes from a lack of education and familiarity with them.

Mastiff, many of us, YES, me included, that do know about some things, forget that others may not. I mean we are just so used to "IT" and it is so natural for us that we oft times may not think others had the same exposure that we did.

My Dad was a mechanic for over 40 years. I grew up around tools. I know an open end from a box end wrench. A crescent wrench from a channel lock. And vice grips from needle nose pliers. A lot folks don't because they have never been exposed to them. I also know what a 16 pound post maul is for.
