I lost my original dogfish, in the move, they seem to have a problem falling out of their sheaths over time, but I got another one, and the second was a plain edge which I like better. the combo one was hard to sharpen.

Thanks guys! Vic - I need to get my DM sharper - but I just ran outside and did some cutting - it does great on green wood, which is really all I'd be cutting a whole lot of in survival - and it will baton well for a knife its size. I also tweeked my LF kydex pants for it - made it much tighter on the blade portion and got it of of the handle (it was tearing it up). I then lashed that directly to one of the outside grenade pouches on my Ammo pouch. Its a perfect size BOB to throw in the truck every time I leave the house.

Paul - I've thought about the BATAC a lot - but my sheath for it is large and kind of unwieldy. I'd also be pretty distraught if it were to get stolen, being in my vehicle. I DO have another Mutt, though!

I really like the TAK - its sharp as heck and stays that way - but it isn't my first choice for batoning, which I think is something a "do all" survival knife should be able to be used for confidently. The TAK will probably stay in the "river knife" position, since D2 is great for stain resistance.

Mac - sounds like Paul will know the most about that Mod4 - looks nice, though.

Dan - I keep my Vic Farmer in my pocket, along with a flashlight (Fenix L1D), and on my keyring is a firesteel and mini-SAK. That is the survival gear that is always on my person - and the Ammo pouch setup is always near me when I'm out of the house.

I think D2 would make for a nice blade. As for it being brittle, I think that would be a sign of a poor heat treat.

D2 was originally for punches and dies so it would definitely have to handle some serious abuse without chipping or fracturing.

Yeah they need gas. Yes you should change the oil once in a while! No you don't need blinker fluid! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
