For me it was growing up using my SAK, the folder and fixed, cheap hollow handled knife my dad gave me. Then around college I went on a quest to find that perfect knife. I started with Bear MGC and even bought a Frost Cutlery Undertaker bowie (crap) which just sits under a chair collecting dust. Finally I decided to read about steel and found that carbon was the real thing and learned about rockwell as well.
I then did internet research and found Cold Steel. From there moved on to Spyderco and Benchmade for folders and around 1998 I found Busse. Got my first SHBM and kept going. I did buy a few more Cold Steels, back when they were good and from there just bought quality instead of the earlier crap. Busses came, CRKT came, Benchmade, Spyderco, Leatherman, customs, Opinal and more Busses. Finally I head about Scrap Yard from magazines and the forum and one day the Blade Mag said that the site was up. I found that it was and the rest is history. Now I can't stop! I forgot to mention my Ranger knives and Ontario RAT knives/folders.
Now it is Busse, Scrap Yard and Swamp Rat with the occasional garnish. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
