As Andy pointed out, a #2 fish/frog gig ($2-3 at most outdoor stores) is an excellent way to feed yourself and requires very little skill other than patience.

Put 2 small wood screws in your kit to affix the gig to a shaft as these gigs are usually drilled with 2 holes near their base. I duct tape the screws inside the hollow of the spear. Cover the exposed barbs with cardboard/duct tape to avoid injury.

Just like anything else related to harvesting most wildlife, check your local fish & game laws BEFORE testing.
