I've always found that any bow, be it recurve, compound, or a crossbow (recurve or compound) should always have the string waxed, to help prevent wearing on the string, and help for a smooth release when firing. It also protects the string from bad weather, although this point is usually dependent on what your string is made from.

I always make sure to work the wax into the string with my thumb and finger.
